This former school was built in 1910, by the London County Council, for 340 boys. When it opened 1911 is was known as Lauriston Road Central School, but by 1913 the name of the school had changed to Hackney Central School. The Central Schools were established in 1911 to provide education for brighter children whose parents could not afford the fees and who had not won a scholarship. According to the school’s headmaster, Mr Chew, these schools 'were intended to put boys and girls on the road they could travel best'. The pupils were given a general education that emphasised the acquisition of ‘commercial’ skills, like shorthand, bookkeeping and typing. The passing of public examinations was not the primary aim of the Central Schools. In 1917 the school moved into the 1902 board school on Cassland Road. Later the school came back to the site to also occupy the 1891 building located nextdoor to this building. In the late 1910s the ‘1910’ school building became Lauriston Primary School. They remained in the building until the 1970s when it then moved to a modern building opposite where it still remains today.
